Tattooing—A Brief History —
The word tattoo is said to have two key origins: 1st, from the Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means “striking something” 2nd, from the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means “to mark something” The history of this form of human body-art (decorative body modification) referred to as “tattoo” began thousands of years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them. These permanent designs—sometimes plain, occasionally elaborate, always personal—have served several functions: amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments, and even forms of punishment. Tattooing in Japan is thought to go back to the Paleolithic era, some ten thousand years ago. Numerous other cultures have had their own tattoo traditions, ranging from rubbing cuts and other wounds with ashes, to hand-pricking the skin to insert Dyes.
